Chris Boden –  the Aylett Allotment Challenge Cup Winner 2009!

After seven attempts (but still achieving a creditable tally of 5 third places and 1 second place) Chris Bowden finally topped the podium and became the third CNAA Summer show winner to be presented with the Silver Ryder Cup on Wednesday 18th January 2009. The cup was presented by Roger Aylett at Aylett Nurseries and the event was attended by his wife Hazel, son-in-law Adam, Aylett staff  and many friends and members of the association.

The was originally given by Leonard Ryder to St. Albans Horticultural Society of which Roger Aylett was a long standing member. When they went into liquidation they donated the cup to him for his committment to the society. It is inscribed as the “Amateur and Allotment Holders Challenge Cup”. It will be displayed at Aylett Nurseries for the public to view.

Chris hadn't originally intended to enter last year, but spotted one specimen that had potential. He then looked closer - according to John Boden (first winner of the cup) 'too close!'.  He found other contenders and so lifted the cup. He said that normally he grows some vegetables specifically for the show but this time he had not done so - so it just goes to show that you can still win without being a Percy Thrower.

Aylett Nurseries provided tea and coffe and some excellent pastries. As you can see from the pictures, it was a great opportunity to meet fellow allotment enthusiasts and gardening experts like the Ayletts and their very friendly and helpful staff. Thank you!

And for such a prestigious event it was no surprise to see the paparazzi turn up in force!

So, are you the one who's going to get your name on that cup this year? The snow has gone (at the moment) so get out there and grow!

Your cup next year?

If you're new to this, or are falling by the wayside on your allotment check the hints and tips pages. If you just need to know how to prepare your veggies you can find the guide here.
